YOUR PHOTOSHOOT

GUIDE

Thank you for booking your shoot with FKB Photography. Now it's time to get excited! This welcome guide has been put together to give you an idea of what to expect, and to answer any questions you might have. Let's get started :)

What will happen on the day?

On the day of your family shoot we'll meet at the location we've arranged. If we're out on location, please try to arrive five minutes early if possible, so we can all say hello and have a bit of a chat to make sure everyone is comfortable before we get going. I know this is easier said than done when trying to arrange little people!

My style is natural and informal, so please don't worry if the kids aren't overly cooperative straight away or are having an 'off' day - more often than not, everyone needs a bit of time to relax into it, and having a camera pointing at you constantly can feel a bit strange at first. There will be plenty of patience and encouragement for any shy or unsure members of the party, if it's needed. Shoots can take anywhere between 30-60 minutes, depending on the ages and number of children (and pets). There's no set way of getting what we need, and children do have varying attention spans, but I promise you will have plenty of choice when it comes to your finished photos.

What to wear

Multiple hands of different sizes and skin tones stacked together in a gesture of unity and teamwork.

The question I get asked more than any other is 'what should we wear?'

In a nutshell, if you want your photos to look classy and timeless, go for complementary colours and textures. A good general rule of thumb is to wear plain tones that look good next to each other, so there are no big clashes of colour. This is only a guide - it's up to you of course - if you're a family that is all about big and colourful then that is what will tell your story!

We're not aiming for perfection, we're aiming to capture you as you are - uniquely you. That said, for many people, characters and logos on clothing can really date your photographs, so keeping an eye on matching neutrals - white, tan and a deeper hint of colour can work really well. Textures can also look fab - woollies, especially in the colder months, look cosy and warm. The main thing is that you're all comfortable (cold children can be grumpy models!) and will love the results when you look back on your photos in years to come. If you’re really unsure try searching on Pinterest or Google.

As a side note, its worth thinking about the location we've chosen when it comes to wardrobe - if we're in the park or trekking across muddy fields then it'll be wellies all the way. If you're after a summer vibe and we're shooting in fields then you may want to wear a light dress or linen and put the children in light coloured clothes. At the end of the day it's a balance between practical, comfortable, and looking how you want to look in your finished photographs.

Accessories: If the children have a favourite toy or blanket you want to incorporate then please feel free to bring it along. This often also helps them relax and feel comfortable.

TO POSE OR NOT TO POSE?

Don't worry too much about posing - family photography is all about connection!

Nine times out of ten when I ask customers to choose the photos they love the most, they'll look something like this one.

When we meet for the shoot I might pose one or two key shots, but I'll largely be looking to capture genuine moments between everybody, whether that's generations of family, or just the kids - so just relax and enjoy it and the rest will follow.

Gone are the days when film photography meant only one chance to get it right and so stiff poses and looking straight at the camera with a big forced smile were the norm. These days we have plenty of chances to snap that perfect shot which shows the connection and personality in your family. So as we're walking look at each other, interact, cuddle, be yourselves and don't feel obliged to always be looking into the camera saying 'cheeese!'

WHAT’S NEXT?

Your personal gallery will be ready in 7-10 days. When we've finished our session you can expect to hear from me in about a week's time, when you'll receive an email with a link to your personal gallery. The link is shareable, so feel free to forward to family and friends, if you feel like showing off :)

Included in your email will be a code for you to download your photographs directly to your own laptop or iPad. And that's it - they're all yours! They'll be sized so they can be printed up to A3 size. You own the right to reproduce them, and use however you wish* so show them off, update your social media, print them on canvas or for grandparents - the choice is yours.

*Please note that ultimate copyright remains with the photographer. I may use images on my social media pages or website, so if you would rather I didn't, just let me know! Thank you.
