Viewfinder: Say Goodbye to Hesitations - Your Headshot Photography Questions Answered

Realised you need a professional headshot? Maybe it's for your LinkedIn profile, your company website, acting auditions, or even just to update your professional image. Whatever the reason, it's natural to have a few questions and perhaps even some anxieties about the process and honestly I bet I’ve heard them all 🙂 What I say to anyone who books a headshot session is this; it’s my job to catch the real ‘you’ which means that you may feel a bit uncomfortable at first, and some of the early shots may feel a bit forced, but at some point, you will let your guard down, and as a photographer, for me that’s the goal, as this is when we’ll really capture your natural state.

Read on to find out more about some of the common concerns I hear (and answers to your headshot questions).

Bright colours can look great against a white background

"Can you make me look thinner?!"

This is a very common request, and the good news is, professional headshot photography techniques can absolutely help you look your best and feel confident - but it's not about drastic alterations, but rather about using flattering lighting, posing, and camera angles to get the best result!

  • Lighting is Key: Strategic lighting can sculpt your features, creating shadows and highlights that define your jawline and slim your overall appearance. We'll work together to find the light that flatters you most.

  • Posing Power: The way you hold your body makes a huge difference. Simple adjustments like elongating your neck, slightly turning your body, and engaging your core can create a more streamlined silhouette. I'll guide you through poses that are both natural and flattering.

  • Wardrobe Choices: Darker colours tend to be more slimming, and the right neckline can also make a difference. We can discuss wardrobe options beforehand to ensure you feel comfortable and confident, and I’d recommend a couple of changes of clothing if possible too.

  • Gentle Retouching: While I focus on capturing your authentic self, subtle retouching can help smooth skin, reduce minor blemishes, and enhance your features without looking artificial. We can discuss your preferences for retouching beforehand!

"I don't photograph well."

This is a feeling many people share…including me! Often, it stems from feeling awkward in front of the camera or not knowing what to do. My job as your headshot photographer is to make you feel comfortable and guide you every step of the way.

  • Relaxed Atmosphere: My on-location set up is designed to be a relaxed and simple environment. We'll chat, get to know each other, and ease into the session.

  • Expert Direction: You won't be left wondering what to do with your hands or where to look. I provide clear and gentle direction on posing, expressions, and even subtle movements that make a big difference in the final image.

  • Practice Makes Perfect (Almost!): We'll take a few test shots at the beginning so you can see how you look on camera and make any adjustments. This helps build confidence and allows you to get comfortable with the process.

  • Focus on Connection: A great headshot isn't just about looking good; it's about conveying your personality and professionalism. I'll help you connect with the camera to capture an authentic and engaging expression.

"I don't know what to do with my teeth when I smile."

Smiling naturally and confidently is key to a great headshot. If you're self-conscious about your teeth, here are a few things to consider:

  • Natural Smile: Often, a genuine, relaxed smile that reaches your eyes is the most flattering. We can work on finding your natural smile – it might be a full smile, a closed-mouth smile, or even a subtle, confident smirk.

  • Practice in the Mirror: Before your session, spend a little time in front of the mirror experimenting with different smiles to see what feels and looks most natural to you.

  • Subtle Adjustments: Small adjustments to your head and jaw position can sometimes make a difference in how your smile appears. I can guide you on these subtle tweaks.

  • Focus on Your Eyes: Remember, a genuine smile involves your whole face, especially your eyes. When you feel happy and relaxed, your eyes will sparkle, drawing attention away from any concerns about your teeth.

"What should I wear?"

It’s important to consider what you want to get across with your headshot - a practical uniform? A professional suit jacket? Or something down to earth and friendly?

  • Dress for Your Industry: Consider the typical attire in your profession. A lawyer might opt for a suit, while a creative professional might choose something more relaxed but still polished.

  • Solid Colours are Your Friend: Busy patterns can be distracting. Solid colours tend to look best and help keep the focus on you.

  • Well-Fitted Clothing: Make sure your clothes fit well and are wrinkle-free. Ill-fitting or creased garments can look unprofessional.

  • Consider Necklines: Different necklines flatter different face shapes. V-necks and scoop necks can be elongating, while crew necks can look more conservative.

  • Bring Options: If you're unsure, bring a couple of different outfits. We can try them out and see what looks best on camera.

“Do you have a studio?”

I don’t have a studio - I take all photos either outdoors when the weather is suitable, at an agreed indoor location or with my backdrop and lights at your workplace or home. If you would prefer a full studio shoot this can be arranged for an additional fee.

"How long will the headshot session take?"

The duration of a headshot session can vary depending on your specific needs and how comfortable you feel, however most individual headshot sessions typically last between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows enough time for different poses, backgrounds (where possible), and reviewing some of the images to ensure you're happy.

"Will I get to see the photos afterwards?"

Yes - after your session, you'll receive a gallery link to view and download your images - you can expect 20-30 options typically and these will be with you within a week or so.. These are yours to keep and will give you a range of options.

We’ll go through a few different options for poses, and settings (where location allows).
