Family Photoshoot Q&A

On the fence about whether a professional family photo session is right for you? Want to book but think it’s going to be stressful? These are some of the concerns I’ve heard time and again from parents who want professional images but for whatever reason are not quite ready to make the leap. Here we look at some of the common misconceptions around family photography and how you can prepare for a successful shoot.

Family photoshoots mean everyone can get into the shot.

Belief: Professional photoshoots are expensive.

Reality: My standard package for family photography is £175. While this might sound like a lot of money, unlike other photography packages, hen you book with me you keep all your edited images. Many studios will sell you a session for £25, but when it comes to getting your hands on your photographs, the price suddenly jumps up £200 or more. There are absolutely no hidden costs with my family photography packages.

Belief: : Our schedule is busy, it’ll be impossible to find a suitable time for everyone.

Reality: I work evenings and weekends, as well as in the week. This means I can offer flexible timings to suit you, and to make it even easier and help you plan ahead, you can now browse availability and book online, choosing. date and time that works for you and the rest of your family at your own convenience.

Belief: It’ll be stressful to get everyone ready, especially my young children.

Reality: My shoots are relaxed and fun. When you book you’ll receive my guide to preparing for your shoot including what to wear and how to choose a location (or if you’re unsure I’m happy to suggest somewhere!) If you have unsure or shy children, don’t worry - I' have bags of patience and am used to helping children overcome any reluctance.

Belief: We’re self-conscious / uncomfortable in front of the camera.

Reality: Most people have some reluctance to get in front of the camera, but I can’t name any instance where a customer has had any regrets! If this is a big concern for you I am more than happy to have chat before the shoot to discuss your concerns. Much of what we do will be based on natural interactions and candid moments rather than posed shots. I promise I can capture everyone at their best 😊

Belief: I’m worried about my child’s behaviour / that they may be unpredictable

Reality: I am experienced in working with children and can handle various situations. I’ve been doing this for 12 years so I have seen the whole range of kids’ approaches to being in front of the camera! I usually suggest you bring favourite toys or snacks, and we can plan for breaks and be flexible during the session.

Belief: I don’t really need professional photos when I can take pictures myself.

Reality: While today’s cameras and cameraphones can produce great pictures, the quality and difference professional photography offers, such as better lighting, composition, and post-processing, is unmatched and will give you a hugely elevated result. It’s also brilliant having everyone in the photo together without one person missing because they are taking the picture!

Belief: Professional photoshoots are too formal and staged.

Reality: Not here they’re not :) I take a friendly lifestyle / documentary approach that captures genuine family interactions. Your images will show casual, natural family portraits that reflect your personalities. My reviews always tell me I’m good at putting people at ease too!
